Holding service costs in line

Even though margins were good, there is no question that gallonage was down during the warm winter. It took some creative management to keep costs in line-particularly service costs. Many marketers said that customer requirements for service were less, but a competent staff was needed to care for the burners. To get a measurement on how marketers had managed service departments during this warm winter, we asked our monthly panel some questions. We worked on this study when records were being set for the coldest April 4 and 5. In any event, we found that the average company took care of 3,794 customers with a staff of 7.4 servicemen. This translates into a customer load of 513 for each man. Following the pattern of past years, the marketers in the West had the largest number of customers per man - 733.
