The capabilities of energy storage devices to protect sensitive electronic systems during power disturbances are well known. A properly sized system will support loads through voltage sag events and short outages caused by recloser operations. Cost justification for these energy storage devices has been difficult from an economic standpoint. This paper will discuss strategies used to justify protection for these sensitive loads. For those of us working in utility power quality programs it is critical we find an easily understood way to help our customers document all costs associated with down time caused by power disturbances. We are well aware the financial health of our customers has a direct impact on the financial health of our own companies. Helping them justify this protection, if it can be done, provides our customers a valuable service.
