China`s first set of domestically advanced technology subcritical 600-MW coal-fired unit was successfully put into operation in October 1995 at Harbin No. 3 Power Plant, Heilongjiang Province located in the northeastern part of China. This is the new milestone in the electric power construction history of China. Since 1980s, the electric power industry of China has achieved rapid development and, down to the end of 1995, the total installed capacity of electric power generation amounted to 210,000 MW. According to the State`s ``Ninth Five-Year Plan`` and down to the year 2000, the total installed capacity of electric power generation will amount to about 300,000 MW, thus the development of large generating capacity units has become the major objective for electric power construction in China. Up to now, China`s output of coal has ranked in first place for the world. Giving priority to coal in the composition of electric power production will be the main tendency for a considerably long period of time in China. For this reason, it is of great importance to do design and research on coal-fired power plants well, reduce project investment, reduce coal consumption, increase efficiency, and improve the environment. In short, to improve the design and manufacturing level of domestically made large capacity and high parameter coal-fired units is the key to developing the electric power industry of China.
