Spherical indentation of clamped orthotropic laminates
- Chung-Hua Polytechnic Inst., Hsin Chu (Taiwan, Province of China). Inst. of Aeronautics and Astronautics
Problems of spherical indentation of fully clamped square orthotropic laminates simulating static indentation testing condition are studied. The approach superposes an iterative algorithm and methods of classical anisotropic elasticity and a shear deformable plate theory. The contact area as well as the associated contact and interlaminar stresses are located for a prescribed total contact load. A good agreement is obtained between the present results for a slightly orthotropic case and published solutions. Emphasis is then placed upon the investigation of the effects of span and the stacking sequence on various local responses for typical orthotropic laminates. The results show that the hypothesis of Hertzian contact fails relatively easier than that of a circular contact area. The effect of the stacking sequence is much more significant than which of the span of the laminate. In addition, the interlaminar shear stresses tends to be localized to the top surface and around the contact boundary in the in-plane domain.
