Superdeformation in {sup 151}Gd

The first observation of superdeformed (SD) states in the nucleus {sup 151}Gd is reported. Gamma rays emitted from {sup 130}Te({sup 26}Mg,xn) reactions at 149 MeV beam energy were studied using the Eurogam phase I detector array, yielding a wealth of information on SD states in {sup 150}Gd. The 5n-evaporation channel ({sup 151}Gd) was populated with roughly 30% intensity relative to the 6n channel ({sup 150}Gd). Still, no SD bands could in the first analysis be assigned to {sup 151}Gd. Given the success of mean field theories in predicting SD structures around A=150 and the fact that such calculations predict favored SD minima, in {sup 151}Gd (albeit less favored than in {sup 150}Gd) the lack of experimental evidence was challenging. An extended search for weak SD structures applied to the three-and higher-fold data using an automated search algorithm, enabled identification of three new SD bands. Isotopic assignment to {sup 151}Gd could be done based on coincidences with low-lying yrast transitions in this nucleus. One of the bands is assigned to the 7{sub 3} intruder orbital and the other two as a strongly coupled signature-partner pair built on the [402]5/2(or possibly the [514]9/2) Nilsson orbital. A comparison with SD structures in {sup 150}Gd provides interesting information on static neutron pair correlations in SD nuclei around A=150.
