Excited superdeformed bands in {sup 150}Gd

A recent experiment to study superdeformed (SD) states in {sup 150}Gd will be discussed. The data were taken at Daresbury Laboratory using the EUROGAM Ge detector array. The nucleus {sup 150}Gd was populated with the reaction {sup 130}Te({sup 26}Mg,6n){sup 150}Gd. A preliminary analysis of the data has revealed a new superdeformed band, the third SD band to be observed in this nucleus to date. This band has some very interesting properties, in particular, at high spins, the transition energies in the new band are very similar to those in the yrast SD band in {sup 152}Dy. Thus {sup 150}Gd has two excited SD bands, one of which is identical to the yrast band in {sup 151}Tb and one which is similar to the yrast band in {sup 152}Dy. The properties of these bands will be compared with those of their {open_quotes}identical{close_quotes} partner bands and discussed in terms of the SD intruder configurations and the coupling of the [301]{1/2} orbital to a rotating SD core.
