Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls: An analytical approach for ``combined`` analyses
- Univ. of Mississippi, University, MS (United States)
Analysis or organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) using gas chromatography (GC) can be tedious and time consuming. One problem has been a need to separate the sample into two fractions before analysis because of problems with resolution. The second is that because of the extreme sensitivity of ECD detectors, strict operating parameters must be maintained. In response to these issues, the authors have developed a ``combined`` method to analyze OC pesticides and PCBs. Using a combination of temperature programming and column size, baseline resolution of 17 pesticides, 21 PCB congeners, and 2 internal standards can be achieved in a single GC run. By use of a spiked-laboratory control material, recoveries of the individual analytes may be monitored for quality control.
