Pion absorption on polarized {sup 7}Li

Angular distributions, cross sections and analyzing powers for the reaction {sup 7}Li({pi}{sup +},pp){sup 5}He at an incident energy of T{sub {pi}} = 165 MeV have been measured at PSI, Switzerland. The emitted protons were detected with the SUSI spectrometer at 38{degrees} in coincidence with an array of five scintillator telescopes centered around the quasi-free angle for absorption on a nucleon pair. Despite some success in describing differential cross sections, DWIA calculations using a quasi-deuteron model tend to underpredict absolute pion absorption cross sections. By studying vector and tensor analyzing powers, which are predicted to be sensitive to details of the DWIA calculations, the authors hope to gain a better understanding of the reaction mechanism. Results including angular and energy distributions as well as analyzing powers will be presented and compared with DWIA predictions.
