Part of a recycled paperboard manufacturing tradition for more than 50 years, a mill owned and operated by Chicago Paperboard Corp. is still thriving today. Although the city itself has grown around it, the facility, for the most part, has remained relatively unchanged. Still, while the physical nature of the building, among other things, has stayed the same, the processing and manufacturing operations are a modern affair. Indeed, subtle changes and adjustments have been made over the years to keep the facility running smoothly. Currently, the mill accepts old corrugated containers (OCC), residential and commercial mixed paper, and No. 6 old newspapers (ONP) as feedstock. In addition to the challenge of getting enough feedstock for the mill, keeping on top of what has become a volatile market for waste paper recently is an important part of overall operations for Chicago Paperboard management. As the demand for waste paper has increased in the past year, so has the price for almost all grades of fiber.
