An aspect of concrete protection by surface coating
- Johnson-Thomas Association, Chesshire (United Kingdom)
The effect of surface contaminants on the efficacy of protection by overcoatings to concrete is reported. The variables used were salt species contaminant, surface coating type and concrete quality. Exposure involved partial immersion in water followed by partial burial in soil, each for six months, repeated for a total time of three years. Protection was considered via relative changes in surface wettability and water capillary rise, calcium leaching and carbonation depths. It was found that surface contamination did reduce the protectiveness of coatings, rather more so for a poly-isocyanante that an alkoxy-silane. However, high quality concrete incurred less reduction in coating protection.
