Coatings to protect concrete
- ed.
At Eastman Chemical`s Tennessee plant, acetic acid is used in large quantities to manufacture cellulose esters. Acetic acid is very corrosive to concrete, such as floors, curbs and equipment bases. The original corrosion resistant acid brick used to protect concrete surfaces in the plant showed no outward sign of failure, but small hairline cracks between the brick and mortar had allowed acid to reach the concrete and corrode it away over time in a small catalyst makeup area. After performing laboratory tests to screen potential replacements for the acid brick, Eastman engineers replaced the brick with a vinyl-ester coating. The vinyl-ester coating proved superior to the acid brick because failures can be detected almost immediately and the coating is less costly to install and maintain that the brick. In general, monolithic coatings cost less in installation and maintanence, are easily inspected, and have similar protection qualities as acid brick.
