Dielectric measurements are used to monitor cure of blends of thermoplastic and thermoset resins. The system is initially a mobile liquid and loss processes reflect the ionic mobility. As cure proceeds the conduction loss is suppressed and eventually disappears at gelation. Vitrification is marked by a further decrease in the dielectric loss and permittivity of the system. Many mixed systems exhibit a residual dielectric loss which can be attributed to the phase morphology of these systems. Water ingress can be studied using the dielectric method, changes in the morphological with change in thermoplastic contact modifies the equilibrium water content and rate of absorption. Atomic force microscopy of the surfaces reveals microporosity arising from phase separation and surface tension differences of the components in the matrix. The surface structure changes are observed in the dielectric measurements.
