Trimethylhydrazinium Iodide ((CH{sub 3}){sub 3}N{sup +}NH{sub 2}I{sup -})(1) represents a new class of reagents capable of aminating electrophilic aromatic substrates by vicarious nucleophilic substitution (VNS). It is easily prepared, very stable, and tracts with nitroaromatic substrates at room temperature to give aminated nitroarenes in good to excellent yields. This study investigated the VNS reaction of 1 with a series of substituted nitrobenzenes and nitroheteroarenes, including several nitroazoles.
