The removal of {sup 137}Cs and {sup 90}Sr from nuclear waste is of fundamental importance for both the defense and the commercial power industry. It is estimated that 9.5 MCi of Cs and 45 MCi of Sr are stored in 149 single-shell tanks at Hanford (WA). Cs removal technologies are required for the alkaline supernatant whereas Sr removal technologies must work for alkaline supernatants and for acidic solutions generated by sludge washing activities. Cs and Sr removal technologies that utilize the cobalt dicarbollide separation agent have been developed in which the dibromo cobalt dicarbollide derivative is sorbed into a variety of organic and inorganic supports. This approach has been shown to be effective for alkaline media. The results of this study using simulated and actual Hanford tank waste will be presented.
