Carbon catalysts prepared from coal could be very active delialogenation and dehydroxylation catalysts. We will discuss the influence of the method of preparation, coal rank and other parameters on the activity, selectivity, and diffusion properties of various coal-based carbon catalysts. Some of the reactions to be discussed are dehalogenation reactions of large aromatic compounds of interest in environmental chemistry.
