In the authors` work on novel catalysts for fossil fuels processing, it has been shown that carbon catalysts exhibit a remarkable selectivity for cleavage of bonds connecting aliphatic carbons to polycyclic aromatic systems. The authors now report on the ability of carbon catalysts to dehydroxylate and dehalogenate substituted polycyclic aromatics under relatively mild conditions (1 - 2 atm., 350 - 420{degrees}C) in the presence of an organic hydrogen donor. Partial hydrogenation is shown to accompany dehydroxylation of polycyclic phenols. Product selectivity will be discussed in relation to the reaction mechanism.
