Adsorption and reaction at mineral surfaces play a crucial role in many environmental processes. Thin films of oxides over refractory metal susbstrates are model systems, providing us with unique opportunities in exploring some fundamental issues in the chemical reactivity of mineral surfaces. Thin films of magnesium oxide, calcium oxides, and mixed oxides of calcium and magnesium on molybdenum have been prepared. The reactivity of the films were examined with temperature programmed desorption of water and isotope labelling experiments. The links between chemical properties and structural properties were explored with scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. Implications to mineral surface chemistry will be discussed.
