Polyfuran: Molecular modeling and synthetic studies
- Univ. of Arkansas, Monticello, AR (United States)
Due to the corrosion of exposed surfaces, NASA is interested in synthesizing a polymer that will cut down on this corrosion. It is desirable for the polymer to be conductive, water soluble, and to have a coating system with few additives. It is also important that the polymer maintain conductivity after it is cross-linked. POLYFURAN is a polymer that may fit these characteristics and is therefore the topic of our research. The 3-d shape and planarity of the polymer is studied using molecular modeling by the program PC-Model. Synthesis of the polymer has been undertaken. Synthetic studies utilizing a variety of oxidizing agents were conducted. The resulting polyfuran was characterized by {prime}H NMR and IR. The results of the molecular modeling and synthetic studies will be discussed.
