Synthesis of model polymers and related structures in support of vinyl monomer grafting studies. Progress report, July 1, 1984-February 1985

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5985046
The objectives of the proposed research program are to study the Ce/sup 4 +/ promoted grafting of acrylamide and other suitable monomers onto modified or unmodified cellulose leading to water-soluble copolymers. In support of these objectives a number of model branched and cyclic polymers and copolymers will be synthesized. The structures of these polymers will be determined by ir, /sup 13/C and /sup 1/H NMR, SEC (GPC) and viscometry, as well as chemical degradation processes combined with the above methods. Also in support of these objectives, physical characterization and rheological studies will be undertaken in order to better understand structure-property relationships of water-soluble (co)polymers and graft-copolymers. The methods used will include SEC, NMR, ultracentrifugation, viscometry and multi-cell equilibrium dialysis (HCED). 18 references, 7 tables.
