Emerging issues in risk assessment in California
A comprehensive review is underway of the policies, methods and guidelines used for the identification and assessment of chemical toxicity by the California Environmental Protection Agency Cal/EPA (Cal/EPA) Boards, Departments and Offices. An advisory committee composed of distinguished scientists, drawn from outside state government with expertise in issues related to risk assessment has been convened by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) in accordance with Health and Safety Code Section 50074 to conduct this review. This committee, the Risk Assessment Advisory Committee of the OEHHA Science Advisory Board, will make recommendations to the Director of OEHHA and the Secretary of Cal/EPA concerning whether any changes should be made regarding the State`s practices of chemical risk assessment to ensure that they are based upon current science, and are consistently applied across all Cal/EPA Boards, Departments and Offices. In addition, the committee will assess the appropriateness of any differences between the risk assessment policies, methods and procedures employed by Cal/EPA and those employed by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Academy of Sciences and other similar bodies.
