The biodegradation characteristics of ring-labeled {sup 14}C nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPES) were examined using a bench-scale Semi-Continuous Activated Sludge system (SCAS). The supernatant, sludge, and trapped {sup 14}CO{sub 2} was monitored every two days for 7 weeks. Two principle observations were made: (1) The {sup 14}C NPE was converted to {sup 14}CO{sub 2} and (2) Greater than 90% of solution-phase {sup 14}C was adsorbed to or incorporated in the activated sludge layer.
