Certain new fireplace designs offer a safe, energy efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional wood fireplaces. This booklet reviews one option, the energy efficient wood fireplace. It includes an overview of the characteristics and drawbacks of conventional wood fireplaces, including environmental issues and indoor air quality problems. It then describes advanced combustion wood fireplaces and their advantages with regard to energy efficiency and environmental benefits. Other types of efficient wood-burning appliances are also briefly described: Pellet fireplaces, masonry heaters, and wood stoves. The final sections discuss how to locate a fireplace for maximum benefit and how to use a fireplace efficiently and safely.
