Certain new fireplace designs offer a safe, energy efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional wood fireplaces. This booklet reviews one option, the energy efficient gas fireplace. It includes an overview of the basic types of gas fireplaces available in Canada, types of venting, their efficiency and input/output ratings, ignition systems, controls, and heat exchange capabilities. This is followed by sections covering the following: How to locate a new gas fireplace in a house for maximum benefit; features to look for in an energy-efficient gas fireplace and features to avoid; calculation of heating costs; gas fireplace installation and safe operation; and using the gas fireplace efficiently. The appendix contains examples of how to estimate heating costs of a gas fireplace.
