Nickel-base superalloys are a specialty class of heat treatable engineering materials that derive their mechanical properties from the precipitation of coherent or semi-coherent particles. The precipitation of {gamma}{prime} is one of the most important reactions in nickel-base superalloys, and is the focus of all industrial heat treatments. Superalloy U720LI has been previously studied with regard to current production subsolvus solution and aging heat treatment cycles. This work has shown that {gamma}{prime} develops a bi-modal distribution during precipitation from solution heat treatments cycles. The relationship between {gamma}{prime} size and mechanical properties has been reviewed and a new aging practice for subsolvus solution heat treated U720LI has been identified for optimum mechanical properties.
