The properties of nickel based single crystal superalloys are optimized by a range of thermal heat treatments which produce the precipitation of L1{sub 2} ({gamma}{prime}) ordered coherent particles embedded in a disordered fcc {gamma} matrix. The purpose of the present work is to examine by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM) the relative positions of closely spaced {gamma}{prime} precipitates in the MC2 single crystal superalloy. The present measurements of rigid shift components confirm the sporadic presence of out-of-phase precipitates. The authors describe briefly the route followed to determine unambiguously a shift component between adjacent precipitates in a material prepared from ONERA standard thermal treatment.
