The port collar has been used for various completion operations such as gravel packing and stage cementing for more than 40 years. Basically, the port collar is a casing sub with a sliding sleeve that can be opened and closed to facilitate communicating the inside of the casing with the annulus. A combination operating tool locates, opens and closes the port. Recent improvements in the tool and seal mechanisms make the port collar available with metal-to-metal seals, a locking-closed feature and corrosion resistant construction. This provides reliability for multiple open/close cycles such as those needed in high-build-angle sections and horizontal wells. Several new applications for port collars are finding acceptance in exploration, development drilling and completion. A casing string can be equipped with several port collars and each can be individually actuated by the same operating tool. The full bore port collar can be tested after closure, and drill out of cement is not required after the operating tool is removed.
