Demonstration of SPICAP multimetals CEM

A field demonstration of MRI`s multimetals continuous emission monitor (referred to as SPICAP) was recently carried out on the TSCA incinerator at the Oak Ridge K-25 site that is operated by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems (LMES) for the Department of Energy (DOE). Simultaneous sampling with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 29 was conducted by LMES in order to assess the relative accuracy of the SPICAP CEM. The SPICAP is not yet a fully integrated system, since it has not been equipped with a dedicated ICAP analyzer for measuring the concentration of metals in the liquid that is produced by the SPICAP sampling system. Therefore, 1-hour composite samples were collected during the demonstration, which were subsequently analyzed by LMES on their ICAP laboratory analysis instrument, without undergoing any further digestion or preparation procedures. The SPICAP multimetals CEM utilizes a patented wet sampling device (SpinCon), which collects pollutants (e.g., metals) in any selected liquid media. It is a high gas flowrate sampling device with low feedrates of the scrubbing liquid, thus providing a high concentration ratio and low detection limits. SPICAP is capable of sampling metal emissions in high moisture content stack gases, up to temperatures of 400 F. Three 3-hour sampling runs were carried out at the TSCA incinerator in August 1996, with simultaneous sampling by SPICAP and EPA Method 29. This paper describes those tests and presents an evaluation of the SPICAP results versus EPA Method 29, including assessment of relative accuracy.
