A methodology for the development of the size-specific emission factors for European motor vehicles has been discussed. To determine the size distributions, samples from over 100 vehicle exhausts were collected. The instrument used for the analysis was an optical particle counter which separates the particles into eight channels in the range of 0.75 to 15 m. The mass concentration of these fractions is determined using a calibration factor obtained from the built-in back-up filter. Particulate emissions are presented for cars (< 2.5t), light goods vehicles (< 3.5t), buses and heavy goods vehicles (three categories: 3.5--7.5t, 7.5--17t and > 17t). These exhaust emissions are based on type of vehicle, engine size, age, speed, length of trip and ambient temperature. Additional particulate emissions from other sources are discussed. An algorithm for the re-entrained paved road dust emission factor is modified incorporating the effect of relative humidity. As the characteristics of emissions change near intersections, thus acceleration, deceleration and idle or creeping emission factors for particles have also been developed. A computer program to determine these emissions from individual vehicles has been written in FORTRARN90 and later used in developing the emission factor model for European vehicles.
