Novel polymer electrolytes have been synthesized by the co-polymerization of tetrafluoro ethylene and monomers incorporating the sulfonimide (R-SO{sub 2}-NH-SO{sub 2}-R{prime}) acid functionality in a side chain. These polymers are analogous to Nafion{trademark} perfluorosulfonic acid ionomers and are being considered for fuel cell applications. The authors report on the water content and proton conductivity of several sulfonimide polymers with a variety of functionalities and equivalent weights. It is demonstrated that these materials merit further investigation as electrolytes for PEM H{sub 2}/O{sub 2} fuel cells.
