The well-graphitized vapor-grown carbon whisker that was prepared by the modified procedure showed a high capacity (362 mAh/g) in 1 mol/dm{sup 3}-LiClO{sub 4}/ethylene carbonate (EC) + diethylcarbonate (DEC) electrolyte. Two procedures were examined to prepare the carbon whiskers: in the normal procedure (1A), the whiskers were graphitized after the chopping process, and in the other procedure (2A), they were chopped after the graphitization. The carbon whiskers by the 2A method showed much higher capacity than the whiskers of the same diameter by the 1A. In particular, 2GWH-2A showed the capacity of 362 mAh/g that is 1.6 times of that of 2GWH-1A. The cyclic voltammogram of 2GWH-2A was most different from that of natural graphite among all of the whiskers. The Raman spectrum of 2GWH-2A is suggested that a new structure affecting on the lithium-storage reaction is introduced to the well-graphitized whisker during the chopping process.
