Comparative electrochemical intercalation of lithium by electrochemical methods into Graphite whiskers (2GWH-2A) and into natural graphite have been investigated in 1M LiClO{sub 4}/EC + DEC. The reversible capacity was 363 mAh/g in the case of 2GWH-2A and the coulombic efficiency was 99%, 250 mAh/g for natural graphite. For understanding the mechanism of intercalation of lithium into the carbon, the authors use slow Cyclic voltammetry. When measuring the slow cyclic voltammogram of both 2GWH-2A and natural graphite, 5 cathodic peaks could be seen. The differential chronopotentiogram obtained by derivative of experimental charge-discharge curve shows just 3 peaks. This difference suggests a new site of lithium storage.
