Effects of cationic substitution on the electronic and magnetic properties of manganocuprate with a layered Eu{sub 3}Ba{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}O{sub 12} structure

Systematic studies on the effect of substitutions on the layered manganocuprate Eu{sub 3}Ba{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}O{sub 12} have been conducted. To introduce holes, the authors have made substitutions of Ca for Eu and/or Sc for Mn, (Eu{sub 3{minus}x}Ca{sub x})Ba{sub 2}(Mn{sub 2{minus}y}Sc{sub y})Cu{sub 2}O{sub 12}. Single-phase compounds are obtained over a fairly wide range of x and y values for x {le} 0.7 (y = 0), x {le} 0.5 (y = 0.5), and x {le} 0.1 (y = 1.0). The doped holes are received predominantly at the Mn-O site and change the charge of Mn from 3+ to 4+, and no superconductivity has been obtained for any sample. The electronic ground state of (Eu{sub 3{minus}x}Ca{sub x})Ba{sub 2}(Mn{sub 2{minus}y}Sc{sub y})Cu{sub 2}O{sub 12} is discussed by comparing with that of the three-dimensional perovskite La{sub 1{minus}x}Ca{sub x}MnO{sub 3} and K{sub 2}NiF{sub 4}-type La{sub 1{minus}x}Sr{sub 1+x}MnO{sub 4} compounds. The substitution of Sr for Ba gives rise to a different crystal structure, the Sr{sub 3}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7} structure.
