Measurements and analysis of the paramagnetic susceptibility of La{sub 1{minus}x}Ca{sub x}MnO{sub 3+y} (0 {le} x {le} 1) are reported. The magnetization was also measured in large fields (H {le} 18 tesla) for a specimen of La{sub 0.79}Ca{sub 0.21}MnO{sub 3+y}. The paramagnetic susceptibility is observed to be strongly enhanced for most compositions studied, including a number of antiferromagnetic compositions. This behavior is attributed to the existence of magnetic polarons.
