Almost 95,000 hours of operation have been accumulated on widely different coals in Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combined Cycle (PFBC) plants in Sweden, Spain, US and Japan. Valuable feedback has been obtained from these P200 plants, in the 70--150 MWe range, and has been subsequently incorporated into the design of the world`s first P800 PFBC plant. This 360 MWe plant is currently under construction at Karita in Japan for Kyushu Electric Power Co. by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI), one of ABB`s licensees in Japan. The combined experience from ABB`s existing PFBC plants has demonstrated the viability of ABB`s PFBC technology and the general simplicity of the concept, as well as plant control principles and serviceability. As a result, this technology is now commercially offered worldwide by ABB Carbon, together with its licensees and partners, and PFBC is being recognized as a competitive solution for generation of power and for combined heat and power applications. The combined cycle feature makes PFBC highly efficient for power generation. When compared with conventional power plants, and for the same steam conditions, a PFBC plant typically produces 10% more electricity from the same amount of coal. Fuel flexibility is also a keystone of the PFBC technology. Even with a standard plant, PFBC can use a wide range of coals, and other solid fuels. This was a prerequisite for the Karita plant, which is designed to use any coal from a broad spectrum. This paper summarizes the operational experiences from the first P200 plants, Vaertan in Sweden, Tidd in US, Escatron in Spain and the next, improved design in Wakamatsu, Japan. The design principles used and risk mitigation for the utility sized P800 power plant are also discussed.
