The results of a recent study of cleavage fracture are presented for ternary Mn-containing gamma-based titanium aluminides with duplex {alpha}{sub 2} + {gamma} microstructures. Yield and ultimate tensile strength and fracture toughness are shown to exhibit an inverse square root (Hall-Petch) dependence on the average grain size in these alloys. The Hall-Petch dependence is rationalized using an initiation-controlled fracture model. The high incidence of intergranular cleavage in Mn-containing alloys is shown to occur primarily as a result of the preferential segregation of Mn to grain boundaries.
