In this paper, the authors present recent evidence of the inverse square root dependence, (Hall-Petch behavior), of room and elevated temperature mechanical properties on average grain/lamellar colony size in gamma-based titanium aluminides. Room and elevated temperature yield/ultimate tensile strength and ductility, and room temperature fracture toughness, are shown to exhibit inverse square root dependence on the average grain or lamellar packet size. The results indicate that gamma alloys with higher yield/ultimate tensile strength, ductility and fracture toughness can be engineered by the development of alloying/processing schemes that promote microstructural refinement.
