The ratio {ital R}({Delta}{ital E}) of double to single ionization of He by fast proton impact has been measured as a function of energy transfer ({Delta}{ital E}). While {ital R}({Delta}{ital E}) is observed to be nearly independent of proton energy (1{endash}6MeV) within experimental error, it decreases with increasing energy transfer, from 2{percent} at {Delta}{ital E}=1 keV to below 1{percent} at {Delta}{ital E}=10 keV. Further comparisons of these ratios with those obtained from photoization and Compton scattering are made. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
