The set of the experimental techniques presented here is concerned with the in situ analysis like electrochemistry in organic media, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and ellipsometric spectroscopy whom combinated, enable the monitoring of the different steps of the growth of a polymer film by electropolymerization under cathodic polarisation. The aim of this work is to gather and to discuss the results obtained through current versus potential curves, capacity curves (double layer capacitance) and ellipsometric measurements (thickness of the polymer) during the steps of the electropolymerization. The modification of the double layer capacitance is indebted to the part of the surface occupied by the chemisorbed polymer onto the metal surface. This polymer growth was found to be dependent on the concentration of the monomer in the electrolytic media. This result is confirmed by the ellipsometric measurements. The results of those three complementary {ital in} {ital situ} technique enable to suggest a scheme of the growth of a polymethacrylonitrile chains by the cathodic initiation process. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
