Title: Application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to study the growth and the properties of organic polymers on metals

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (E.I.S.) is widely employed in order to follow the growth of organic layers electropolymerized on metallic substrates in the cathodic or in the anodic process. This technique is used in combination with other electrochemical techniques such as: cyclic voltammetry, chronocoulometry, chronopotentiometry or chronoamperometry normally used for the polymerization process. In fact EIS measurements are inserted between two polymerization stages in order to follow {ital in} {ital situ} the progressive modification of the metallic electrode which leads to a progressive change of the impedance of the electrochemical cell. Moreover when using for the electropolymerization process an electrolytic solution able to swell the growing polymer, the coating layer remains {open_quote}{open_quote}transparent{close_quote}{close_quote} to the electrolyte. The change of the double layer capacitance on the electrode can be measured through the polymer layer and the density of the bonds formed between the surface and the polymer can be derived from those measurements. Some examples of cathodic polymerization of vinylic molecules are given showing how the polymerization process is influenced by the bonds formed on the metal.
