An automatic unstructured grid generation system for geologically complex reservoirs

Conference ·
OSTI ID:28789

An automatic, three-dimensional, locally unstructured, hybrid grid generation system is presented for sloping faults, horizontal wells and fractures. This gridding system replaces a portion of an existing finite difference grid around sloping faults, horizontal wells and fractures by a finite element grid, that is made of triangular prisms, hexahedrons and tetrahedrons. This innovative approach retains the finite difference character of the grid and minimizes the decrease in computational efficiency. The details of the gridding techniques used are discussed, and several example grids are provided that demonstrate that locally unstructured grids can accurately represent today`s geologically complex reservoirs.
