Deepwater fixed platforms fast track design and fabrication
- Petro-Marine Engineering of Texas, Inc., Houston, TX (United States)
Economic incentives justify the risks associated with proposed fast track design and fabrication schedules for deepwater fixed platforms located in the Gulf of Mexico. Past experience on similar projects, use of available computer technology and the application of newly developed integrated design and project management software applications make this possible. One recent oil and gas field development project located in 671 feet of water and one oil field development project located in 525 feet of water are recent examples of this approach. The former project was completed in 15 months from the start of design to offshore installation. The latter project is currently on a 10 month design to installation schedule. Loadout of this facility is scheduled for a November, 1995 installation. Typically, for deepwater fixed platforms, the structural design and jacket fabrication are on the project critical path. Previous experience on similar water depth designs allows the schedule for the structural work to be accelerated. The production facilities design and equipment fabrication becomes critical also. The schedule for the deck fabrication and production equipment installation must be compatible with the jacket installation schedule. Installation costs are far less if the jacket and deck are installed in one mobilization.
