The degree of Th{sup 4+} extraction by di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid is a complicated function of the physicochemical properties of the organic phase. In most instances, the ability of the diluents to be electrophilically solvated and the diluent polarity are the controlling factors. However, a satisfactory relationship between these parameters can only be found by simultaneously considering all solvation processes in linear multiparameter equations. This approach was also successfully for describing the extraction of other metal ions.
