He{sub 2} is examined in the second state of the {sup 3}{Pi}{sub {ital g}} symmetry. This state is shown to be one of the two {open_quote}{open_quote}parent{close_quote}{close_quote} states of the lowest known stable negative ionic He{sub 2}{sup {minus}} state of the {sup 4}{Phi}{sub {ital g}} symmetry. It is compared with the other parent neutral He{sub 2} state, which is the lowest of the {sup 3}{Delta}{sub {ital u}} symmetry, with a consequence that the negative ionic state be a closed channel resonance with respect to both of its neutral parent states. Furthermore the third He{sub 2} {sup 3}{Pi}{sub {ital g}} and the second He{sub 2} {sup 3}{Delta}{sub {ital u}} states are shown to be the parents of the second He{sub 2}{sup {minus}} {sup 4}{Phi}{sub {ital g}} resonance. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
