{open_quote}{open_quote}Effective{close_quote}{close_quote} {gamma}-deformation parameters are derived for even-even Xe, Ba, and Ce nuclei from the matrix elements of ({ital Q}{times}{ital Q}){sub 00} and ({ital Q}{times}{ital Q}{times}{ital Q}){sub 00}. Interacting boson model calculations are performed with the quadrupole operator {ital Q} determined from the {ital E}2 branching ratios of the 2{sub 2}{sup +} decay and compared to results obtained with the rigid triaxial rotor model. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
