Using two photon laser excitation, a Rydberg target has been prepared for use in collisions with slow highly charged ions. A copper vapor-pumped tunable dye laser was used to pump the 3s-3p transition in atomic sodium and a nitrogen laser-pumped tunable dye laser was used to pump the 3p-n{ell} transition (n {approximately} 25, {ell} = 0,2). Selective field ionization (SFI) was used to monitor Rydberg production. Xe{sup 30+} at about 0.15 atomic units of velocity was used as the projectile. The interactions of interest include target n and {ell} change, target ionization, and charge transfer.
