A series of fatigue tests on large scale tubular joints conducted jointly by TWI and SINTEF is described. The primary objective was to examine conditions of most relevance to offshore structures, namely non-stationary variable amplitude loading at high endurance, combined with a sea water environment and cathodic protection. For comparative purposes tests were also conducted in air and under constant amplitude loading. The T-joints investigated had a low fatigue strength in air by comparison with published data. In sea water with cathodic protection lives were reduced by an average factor of 0.6 compared with air. Significant differences between the crack development in air and sea water were observed which have implications with respect to in-service inspection of submerged joints.
