A fracture mechanics model for tubular joints based on the solutions of BS PD6493:1991 and a linear moment release correction is described. The model predicts accurately the fatigue crack development in joints tested previously in air and sea water with cathodic protection, including differences in crack aspect ratio and delayed growth in sea water. Predictions are shown to depend critically on near-threshold crack growth. Implications of the predicted behavior are examined with respect to in-service inspection and reliability of offshore structures.
