The total cross sections of the reactions {pi}{sup {minus}}+{ital p}{r_arrow}{eta}+{ital n} and {ital K}{sup {minus}}+{ital p}{r_arrow}{eta}+{Lambda} near threshold have been calculated in an {ital S}-wave resonance coupled-channel approach. The {eta}{ital N} scattering length is [0.621{plus_minus}0.040+{ital i}(0.306{plus_minus}0.034)] fm and the {eta}{Lambda} scattering length is [0.64{plus_minus}0.29+{ital i}(0.80{plus_minus}0.30)] fm. The large value of the {eta}{Lambda} scattering length leads us to speculate on the possible existence of {eta}-mesic hypernuclei. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
