Reaction of La(C{sub 5}Me{sub 5})(CH(SiMe{sub 3}){sub 2}){sub 2} (1) with [PhNMe{sub 2}H]BPh{sub 4} affords zwitterionic La(C{sub 5}Me{sub 5})(CH-(SiMe{sub 3}){sub 2})BPh{sub 4} (2a), which reacts irreversibly with THF to displace the coordinated tetraphenylborate and afford the first cationic lanthanide alkyl complex [La(C{sub 5}Me{sub 5})(CH-(SiMe{sub 3}){sub 2})(THF){sub 3}]BPh{sub 4} (3a). 14 refs., 1 fig.
