Synthesis and reactivity of the cationic organosamarium(III) complex ((C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 Sm(THF) sub 2 )(BPh sub 4 ), including the synthesis and structure of a metallocene with an alkoxy-tethered C sub 5 Me sub 5 ring, (C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 Sm(O(CH sub 2 ) sub 4 C sub 5 Me sub 5 )(THF)

(C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}){sub 2}Sm(THF){sub 2} (1) reacts with AgBPh{sub 4} in THF to form Ag and ((C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}){sub 2}Sm(THF){sub 2})(BPh{sub 4}) (2) in high yield. 2 crystallizes from THF in space group P2/c (C{sub 2h}{sup 4}; No. 13) with unit cell parameters a = 10.594 (2) {angstrom}, b = 14.254 (3) {angstrom}, c = 16.199 (3) {angstrom}, {beta} = 107.32 (1){degree}, V = 2,335.3 (8) {angstrom}{sup 3}, and Z = 2 for D{sub calcd} = 1.260 g cm{sup {minus}3}. Complex 2 reacts with KC{triple bond}CR to form KBPh{sub 4} and (C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}){sub 2}Sm(C{triple bond}CR)(THF) (R = Ph (3), CMe{sub 3} (4)). The reaction of 2 with KC{sub 5}Me{sub 5} generates (C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}){sub 2}Sm(OCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}C{sub 5}Me{sub 5})(THF) (5). 5 crystallizes from hexane in space group C2/c (No. 15; C{sub 2h}{sup 6}) with unit cell parameters a = 30.009 (6) {angstrom}, b = 13.996 (2) {angstrom}, c = 17.460 (3) {angstrom}, {beta} = 90.25 (2){degree}, V = 7,333 (2) {angstrom}{sup 3}, and Z = 8 for D{sub calcd} = 1.268 g cm{sup {minus}3}.
